MONEY & MOVEMENTS

Since early 2005 JASS  has collaborated with the Association for Women’s Rights in Development (AWID), a global membership organization, on an action-research initiative called “Where’s the Money for Women’s Rights?” to examine funding trends related to gender equality work and support to women’s organizations.  After the launch of the initial research report in October 2005, hundreds of diverse activists and donors have been engaged in dialogues worldwide about the state of funding for gender equality/rights and strategies for effective grantmaking that facilitate movement-building.  In November 2006, AWID hosted an historic international meeting in Queretaro, Mexico that brought together more than 300 activists – from grassroots organizers to policy advocates -- and diverse donors – from bilateral aid to women’s funds -- for in-depth analysis and strategizing on Money & Movements.

A bold and pioneering event for all, JASS was very involved in Money and Movements from plenary speeches to the behind-the-scenes work of planning, selecting participants and facilitating regional strategizing (thanks to Mariela Arce-Panama and Nani Zulminarni-Indonesia). Here are highlights from some of the discussions:

·         Cindy Clark presents the latest research on Where’s the Money for Women's Rights? as part of the opening plenary.

·         Ellen Sprenger and Srilatha Batliwala both presented in the plenary event focused on evaluation with Measuring Success: What's New What's Next? and How have we measured our success?

·         Lisa VeneKlasen along with Marusia Lopez Cruz wrapped up this bold event at the closing plenary.

We look forward to following up the momentum produced by this meeting through our continued collaboration with AWID and through our global movement-building project.
